Inside the Experience
Donut Avenue sits quietly at 138 Main St, Calipatria, serving up a unique blend of freshly baked donuts and authentic Mexican fare—a rare combination that reflects the town’s spirit. From the moment you step inside, the aroma of sweet glaze meets savory spices, inviting you to experience something both familiar and unexpected.
What strikes you first is the freshness and variety. The donuts—soft, sweet, and perfectly glazed—are made daily, offering classics like original glaze and cinnamon twists that pair surprisingly well with hearty breakfast burritos or tacos. One standout is the California burrito, a perfectly textured meal that fills you without weighing you down. For those wanting a little sweetness alongside savory, combo deals include a free donut—an unbeatable value that few spots can match.
Donut Avenue’s menu extends beyond donuts and Mexican dishes. The chicken teriyaki bowl introduces an Asian flair, while simple pleasures like $1 sweet tea and $2 dozen donut holes keep things budget-friendly. The cool, air-conditioned dining room serves as a welcome respite from the desert heat, blending comfort with old-town charm.
Customer reviews often highlight the friendly, youthful staff, though some note the older employees can have a less enthusiastic demeanor. Still, the consistency of quality food and standout prices make Donut Avenue a local favorite and a worthwhile stop for anyone passing through. Its dual identity as a donut shop and Mexican eatery is not only unique but deliciously successful, capturing the essence of Calipatria in every bite.
If you find yourself near Salvation Mountain or just driving through, a visit to Donut Avenue offers more than a quick meal—it’s a taste of community, tradition, and unexpected pairing done right.
“ Update 4/21/21: been going to this place a lot lately seeing it’s the only place in town to eat. I now have to take off a star for the service. The younger women behind the counter are okay, but the older women seem to have a negative attitude. I love this place. They serve everything you want. I’m from Texas and they even serve sweet tea! When you buy a combo, it comes with a free doughnut! CON: They do have to step up their French fry game; they have no seasoning at all —not even salt. ”
“ this place hits the spot. The donuts are fresh in the Mexican food is tasty if slightly salty. Nothing like a breakfast burrito and a maple bar together to start your day order at least convince you to have a nap before your day starts. The sign says it all: DONUT Mexican Food, in that order and emphasis ”
“ Love this place. Visited here almost everyday for 6 months. Cool air conditioned dining room. My favorite is the chicken teriyaki bowl. Best prices around. $1 sweet tea, $2 donut holes per dozen. Great location across from the post office. ”
“ Food is great. Pizza is good. Tacos are excellent. Fresh donuts every day and Mexican treats. Always stop when I'm in town. ”
“ Came to kill time while friend visits someone in the prison nearby and I'm glad I did California burrito was perfect in texture and taste got me full just halfway. Also had donut holes and they're pretty good just like ud find at another place. The drink sizes are large for my hands to fit so no complaints. Very clean also. ”
